Constitution of the1st Republic (1960)
PREAMBLE
The people of Côte d’Ivoire proclaim their attachment to the principles of democracy and human rights, as defined by the Declaration of the Rights of Man and of the Citizen of 1789, by the Universal Declaration of 1948, and as guaranteed by this Constitution.
It affirms its desire to cooperate in peace and friendship with all peoples who share its ideals of justice, freedom, equality, fraternity and human solidarity.
Convinced that unity, while respecting this diversity, ensures economic progress and social well-being,
Deeply committed to constitutional legality and democratic institutions, to the dignity of the human person, and to cultural and spiritual values,
Proclaims its adherence to the rights and freedoms as defined in the 1948 Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the 1981 African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights,
Expresses its commitment to the democratic values recognized for all free peoples, including:
Respect and protection of fundamental individual and collective freedoms;
The separation and balance of powers;
Transparency in the conduct of public affairs;
Commits to promoting regional and subregional integration, with a view to establishing African Unity,
Freely and solemnly adopts as its fundamental law this Constitution, adopted by referendum. Taking into account our ethnic, cultural, and religious diversity, and determined to build a multi-ethnic and multi-racial nation based on the principles of national sovereignty;
Convinced that unity, while respecting this diversity, ensures, through hard work and discipline, economic progress and the social well-being of all;

The people of Côte d’Ivoire, Conscious of their freedom and national identity, of their responsibility to history and to humanity, Conscious of their ethnic, cultural and religious diversity, and desirous of building a united, solidary and prosperous nation, Convinced that union while respecting this diversity ensures economic progress and social well-being, Deeply attached to constitutional legality and democratic institutions, to the dignity of the human person, and to cultural and spiritual values,

PREAMBLE
We, the People of Côte d’Ivoire ;
Aware of our independence and our national identity, assume our historical responsibility before the Nation and before humanity;
Mindful that Côte d’Ivoire is, and remains, a land of hospitality;
Educated by the lessons of our political and constitutional history, desirous of building a fraternal, united, solidary, peaceful and prosperous Nation, and anxious to preserve political stability;
Taking into account our ethnic, cultural, and religious diversity, and determined to build a multi-ethnic and multi-racial nation based on the principles of national sovereignty;
Convinced that unity while respecting this diversity ensures, through work and discipline, economic progress and the social well-being of all;
